Picked this up exclusively because of the cover。The first half of the book felt pretty unnecessary and too predictable while the second half had some pacing issues, in my opinion。I did like the narration and Maia's inner monologue in the few first chapters was enjoyable, even if there were some very unnecessary exclamations thrown in there that made me roll my eyes。Overall, an easy, quick read。 Picked this up exclusively because of the cover。The first half of the book felt pretty unnecessary and too predictable while the second half had some pacing issues, in my opinion。I did like the narration and Maia's inner monologue in the few first chapters was enjoyable, even if there were some very unnecessary exclamations thrown in there that made me roll my eyes。Overall, an easy, quick read。 。。。more

so much potential !! based on the beautiful cover and summary, this book had all the things i love - a woc protagonist determined to overcome patriarchal prejudice, magic, fairytale-esque lore, filial duty, court society and ethereal fashion (not to mention the representation and inspiration i felt at the author's cultural heritage)。 but when i actually got into the book, i felt somewhat disappointed。 maybe i've outgrown the YA genre, though i wouldn't say 18 is a far stretch from its target aud so much potential !! based on the beautiful cover and summary, this book had all the things i love - a woc protagonist determined to overcome patriarchal prejudice, magic, fairytale-esque lore, filial duty, court society and ethereal fashion (not to mention the representation and inspiration i felt at the author's cultural heritage)。 but when i actually got into the book, i felt somewhat disappointed。 maybe i've outgrown the YA genre, though i wouldn't say 18 is a far stretch from its target audience。 the prose was relatively flat, nothing like the opulent, inspired imagery and narration i expected。 the supposedly magical dresses never came to life; there were no spectacular descriptions, no visualisation of the gorgeous elements promised on the cover。 furthermore, the book had virtually no tension。 the plot itself was interesting in theory, but when fleshed out on paper it did little more than pander out as a sequence of events。 i felt no fear, no awe, no wonder at maia's various trials and triumphs; it all seemed too easy and became extremely predictable (which is really saying something if i can see it coming)。 and to top it all off, my worst YA fear came true: the two characters suddenly launched into a whirlwind romance after a handful of interactions (view spoiler)[ and she barely knew anything about him when they slept together (hide spoiler)]。 where was the resistance and restraint she had first shown when in the palace? their relationship didn't have enough development for me to get behind it。 (though i admit i did like edan's character - i'm a sucker for charm and playfulness)。 there was so much telling in this book that i struggled to empathise with most of maia's experiences and emotions。 it pains me to write this because this should have been my dream book。 except it wasn't。i'm extremely biased and still giving it 3 stars because the concept was there and had so much potential to be a beautiful #OwnVoices book - i only hope others are able to identify and fall in love with the story in a way i couldn't。 。。。more

4。5the synopsis really intrigued to pick up this book since it was portrays as a Mulan retelling (which is my favorite movie) i wish there were more scenes of her hiding her identity and all that stuff。 I was really hooked and just wanted more, but then it just kinda changed genre the second half? it was interesting but i wasn't expecting that。 the romance is cute, i'll say。 i'll recommend if you just a book that has light-fantasy romance and is a page-turner。the ending at the end definitely mad 4。5the synopsis really intrigued to pick up this book since it was portrays as a Mulan retelling (which is my favorite movie) i wish there were more scenes of her hiding her identity and all that stuff。 I was really hooked and just wanted more, but then it just kinda changed genre the second half? it was interesting but i wasn't expecting that。 the romance is cute, i'll say。 i'll recommend if you just a book that has light-fantasy romance and is a page-turner。the ending at the end definitely made me want to get the sequel :) 。。。more

i loved the first part of this book so much。 in general the whole concept was great and i was sure that this was going to be a 5 star read。 sadly, the development of the story in the end really messed up my overall impression of the book。

*2。5I found this book to be pretty boring and it was a struggle to finish reading it。 I just was expecting more from it and I never really got that invested in the characters or the plot。 Also, I did think the romance was really cute so that is what motivated me to finish the book。 I feel like I should also say that I used to absolutely love retellings and this feels like the exact type of book I would have loved a few years ago。 So maybe if I had read this when I was younger, I would have liked *2。5I found this book to be pretty boring and it was a struggle to finish reading it。 I just was expecting more from it and I never really got that invested in the characters or the plot。 Also, I did think the romance was really cute so that is what motivated me to finish the book。 I feel like I should also say that I used to absolutely love retellings and this feels like the exact type of book I would have loved a few years ago。 So maybe if I had read this when I was younger, I would have liked it more。 。。。more

I loved almost everything about this book。 The MC was very family oriented (which is amazing), and she's also really independent and stubborn。 And I was obsessed with the dynamic between her and Edan。 I was so satisfying to watch their relationship change and blossom over time and to see them grow as people because of their relationship。 (I also have a weakness for the author constantly describing feelings through the love interests' eyes。) One thing that I didn't like in the book was the fact t I loved almost everything about this book。 The MC was very family oriented (which is amazing), and she's also really independent and stubborn。 And I was obsessed with the dynamic between her and Edan。 I was so satisfying to watch their relationship change and blossom over time and to see them grow as people because of their relationship。 (I also have a weakness for the author constantly describing feelings through the love interests' eyes。) One thing that I didn't like in the book was the fact that the quest that Maia and Edan have to go on only happens because of a princess not wanting to marry the king so a truce can be made with their countries and a war can be stopped。 I mean, she's selfish enough to risk her people dying so that she doesn't have to marry the king。 That detail really annoyed me。 And now we have to see Maia and Edan suffer when the princess's end goal wasn't even accomplished。Also, the book felt really fast。 The author stuffed the competition and the quest into one book and I think some things could've taken more time to go over。 It does convey a sense of urgency even though the quest alone was supposed to take 2 months。Elizabeth Lim is a great writer。 I loved the character development, the details that really helped me imagine what everything (people and places included) in their world looked like。 The characters were really well developed。 Although the whole "centuries older guy falls in love with young girl" plot has been used plenty, I still liked it and I think it was made different and more unique because Edan is an Enchanter who has more to him than Maia thinks at first。Overall, it was a really great book and I would recommend it completely。 It kept my attention and made me lose track of time more than once。 :)From sjsbookblog。com 。。。more

her physical strength and her mental strength。 in the thief’s tower, she encountered a demon (named bandur) and he marked her。 because edan and maia fell in love, edan offered that he will replace her as the guardian of lapzul。 when edan and maia came back, maia finished the three dresses。 she took the one made from blood of the stars and prayed to amana to tell her that she has made the dresses。 amana answers and tells her that she doesn’t need a punishment because she sees that maia will probably suffer in the future for making the dresses, and tells maia that she will grant her one wish。 maia wishes to switch places with edan in his deal with bandur, and amana grants it。 the next day, maia shows her dresses to the emperor and lady sarnai, and the emperor asks her to wear the one made from the blood of the stars。 she puts it on, and secretly removes the amulet that holds edan to the emperor。 the next day edan says that he is going to find a way to use magic and escape, and maia and edan go their separate ways。 the demon visits her once more, and tells her that everyday she will become more and more like a demon。 she decides to visit her family and flees the palace。 she gives the potion that edan gave her to her brother and father, and leaves them too。2。 the magic system。 i really like the idea that magic doesn’t come without a cost。 everyone who becomes an enchanter is bound to someone, like edan is bound to the emperor。 i think that is more fair to the rest of the people, and it doesn’t make them too powerful。3。 the writing was pretty good。 i honestly don’t think i have any problem with the writing, and that rarely happens。 the inner monologues were nicely written and the dialogues made sense for the characters。4。 the charactersa) maia- i quite liked maia。 she loved her family above anything else and did everything she could to help them。 she was heartbroken by the death of her brothers。 she had big dreams, but was afraid to make them happen。 she lived in a quite patriarchal world, and as a women, was led to believe that the best she could do in her life is to marry well。 she had standards even when she had barely anything else (poor calu)。 she lived her life the hard way and she deserves the world。 5/5b) edan- we love a sarcastic and funny love interest。 i loved how he balanced bickering with maia and caring for her。 he was adorable when he wanted to be, but also quite protective。 5/5c) keton- it was so depressing to read about him。 he was once a boy full of energy and quite a rebel, but then he went to war。 maia was so happy to see him, and he her, but he was still really depressed about his legs。 you can still really see that he cares for his sister。 4/5d) finlei and sendo- they both die really early in the book。 later, you can find out that sendo died protecting keton, and that broke my heart。 maia and her father always talked so well about them, and it is shown that they were really good people。 4/5e) the contendors- longhai, yindi and norbu were the main contendors in the challenge。 longahi was really sweet and wholesome, he was really a nice old man。 yindi was the person we were supposed to think was the villian, but in the end he wasn’t all that bad。 norbu was the one who sabotaged maia and the others, and he was pretty brutal。 while yindi was all talk no action, norbu was no talk all action。 4/5f) bandur- he was edan’s old teacher and because he broke his oath, we became a demon。 he was barely in the book, but you can see that he will become a problem later。 3/55。 the romance was so sweet。 maia’s and edan’s relationship was really wholesome and adorable。 you can see that they care so much about each other and were prepared to do anything for each other。 their quarreling was so cute, from beginning to end。 their scenes were delightful and i absolutely enjoyed them。~ “But I would give up the sun and moon and stars if it meant saving him。Him—the boy with no name and yet a thousand names。 The boy whose hands are stained with the blood of stars。The boy I love。”6。 the book was really fun to read。 i read it in one day, and i don’t regret it。 it hooked me up from the start and i enjoyed it so much i just kept reading and reading until i finished it。7。 i actually really liked that the book didn’t end in a cliffhanger。 i mean, it technically is a cliffhanger, but not an obvious one。 the subtleness was quite fresh, for once。~ “I knew I had ended my tale to Baba and Keton on a wondrous note。 I had been afraid to tell them the truth, that my homecoming was not the end of my story。But a new and terrible beginning。” 。。。more
